Anthem, CareFirst and Cigna Response to Data Breach/Cyber Attack

Please read the important responses from Anthem, CareFirst and Cigna regarding the recent cyber attack/data breach at Anthem.

Message from Anthem Regarding Data BreachAnthem

Members who may have been impacted by the cyber attack against us should be aware of scam email campaigns targeting current and former members.  These scams, designed to capture personal information (known as “phishing”) are designed to appear as if they are from our company and the emails include a “click here” link for credit monitoring. Our company DID NOT send these emails.

  • DO NOT click on any links in email.
  • DO NOT reply to the email or reach out to the senders in any way.
  • DO NOT supply any information on the website that may open, if you clicked on a link in email.
  • DO NOT open any attachments that arrive with email.

We are not calling members regarding the cyber attack and are not asking for credit card information or social security numbers over the phone.

This outreach is from scam artists who are trying to trick consumers into sharing personal data. There is no indication that the scam email campaigns are being conducted by those that committed the cyber attack, or that the information accessed in the attack is being used by the scammers.

Our Company will contact current and former members via mail delivered by the U.S. Postal Service about the cyber attack with specific information on how to enroll in credit monitoring. Affected members will receive free credit monitoring and ID protection services.

Message from Cigna Regarding Data Breach

CignaOn February 4, Anthem Inc. disclosed that they had experienced a data breach that exposed personal data of their customers. Little information has been released about how the attack actually occurred, or who was behind it.

Cigna recognizes that the health care industry is a potential target for cybersecurity threats – and we take the safeguarding of our customer and business information very seriously. We are closely monitoring this situation. We have developed and implemented cyber-security and privacy programs that strive to protect the integrity and confidentiality of our customer data, our critical business intelligence, and the security and availability of our systems. We have multiple system products that detect, log, and alert us to suspicious traffic. And Cigna computers have security software installed, and can only connect to our network when they’re running the latest anti-virus software and definitions.

With the constantly evolving landscape of cyber-security threats and regulations, Cigna’s cyber security program will continue to focus on the people, processes, and technology to protect our systems and data.

Message from CareFirst Regarding Data Breach

CareFirst has been made aware by Anthem (like CareFirst, a Blue Cross Blue Shield company) of a cyber-attack on Anthem’s information technology system and a resulting data breach. It is unknown at this time the extent to which the data breach may affect members of other Blue Cross Blue Shield plans.

CareFirst is working with Anthem and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association as the breach is investigated, and will provide information as warranted about the breach and any impact on CareFirst

     2.  Report of suspicious voice mails claiming to be from CareFirst

CareFirst has been informed that some members have received voice messages claiming to be from CareFirst, and asking the member to call back to a given phone number. That number connects the member to a company that offers information on vacation packages.

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield is not sponsoring or making these calls and is investigating this matter.
